RSPCA - Reclaiming Narratives: Black History Month Conversation

Context

As part of its Black History Month programming, the RSPCA wanted to move beyond performative events and create space for real, human conversations about race, identity, and representation. Mabinty was invited to facilitate a live dialogue with staff focused on the theme of “Reclaiming Narratives.”

Approach

The session was intentionally designed to foster an open, safe, and honest environment. Through personal stories and collective reflection, participants explored questions about whose stories are heard, which voices are often excluded, and how organisations like the RSPCA can reimagine representation and inclusion within their culture and communications. The discussion highlighted the emotional labour of “being the only,” the importance of honouring the fullness of Black identity, and the role of storytelling as a form of resistance.

Impact

The session struck a powerful chord with colleagues, opening space for honest reflection and meaningful connection. It resonated on both a personal and collective level, encouraging staff to show up more fully and authentically at work. Delivered with warmth, humour, and deep expertise, it left a lasting impression—sparking energy, curiosity, and a clear appetite for more as one attendee shared, “A huge thank you for today’s session, which was so well received! Your enthusiasm, humour, knowledge and passion were absorbed by our colleagues and left them wanting so much more!” At a time when the organisation is laying the groundwork for a minority ethnic network and looking to elevate lived experiences, the session served as a powerful catalyst for future action and deeper inclusion.
